We recommend the following advanced prompting techniques:
Break down complex queries
Decompose complex queries into smaller, manageable parts. If you have Deep Reasoning enabled, Blue J can produce more complete and structured draft outputs and help outline complex issues. However, it cannot replace the human judgment, inference, and creativity required to produce final, highly customized analyses, reports, or opinions.
Prompt iteratively
Refining and Iterating: iterative prompting involves refining prompts based on initial responses to get more detailed and accurate information.
If you have Deep Reasoning enabled, you typically do not need to use iterative prompting. Deep Reasoning is designed to handle complex questions in a single prompt. The techniques on this page are still useful when Deep Reasoning is not enabled or when you prefer to guide Blue J step by step.
Learn from suggested questions
Use Ask Blue J’s suggested questions as a follow-up to go deeper on your query. You can also use the suggested follow up in a new conversation thread if the results are superior.
Here are some examples:
| Technique | Original Prompt | Follow-Up Prompt |
| Break down query into smaller, manageable parts | "Explain the tax implications of international income for U.S. citizens, focusing on foreign tax credits and the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion." |
Prompt 1: "What are the criteria for claiming the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion?" Prompt 2: "How does the foreign tax credit work for U.S. citizens with income from foreign sources?" |
| Refine and iterate based on initial responses to get more detailed information | "What are the tax benefits for small businesses?” | Prompt 2: "How does Section 179 allow small businesses to deduct equipment purchases?" |
| Use suggested questions to continue the conversation | “What factors are relevant to the assessment of whether a debt-funded UK BidCo should be regarded as having an unallowable purpose?” | ABJ Suggested follow-up: “How does the size of tax advantages influence the assessment of an unallowable purpose for a debt-funded UK BidCo?” |
