Project Files let you save documents to a project so Blue J can use relevant information from those files when answering questions.
Unlike files that are uploaded directly to a thread, Project Files persist across research sessions. This makes them useful for keeping client and engagement specific materials available as you continue your work.
How Project Files work
Add files that provide useful context for the work you are doing in a project, such as:
- Tax returns and forms
- Notices
- Agreements
- Client correspondence
- Previous memos or research
- Other client or engagement specific documents
When you ask a question inside the project, Blue J searches the project files along with its tax knowledge to automatically identify relevant information to use in the answer.
Project Files vs. files uploaded to a thread
Blue J supports two different ways to upload files:
- Files uploaded directly to a thread are temporary and are automatically deleted after 24 hours.
- Project Files are stored persistently so they can be used across multiple research sessions and questions within that project.
Use a thread upload when you only need a file for a specific question or short-lived piece of research.
Use Project Files when the document is part of ongoing client, engagement, or matter context that you may want Blue J to reference again later.
How to add files to a project
- Open the project you want to work in
- Add or drag and drop your file(s) into the Project Files tab
- Wait for the files to finish processing
- Ask your question as usual within the project
Once processed, the files remain available for future questions in that project.
What types of files are supported?
You can add:
- Word (.docx)
- Excel (.xlsx)
- PowerPoint (.pptx)
- Images (.jpeg, .png)
- HTML
- Text (.txt)
- Email files (.msg)
- .heic files
File size and limits
Project Files have the following limits:
- Up to 32 MB per file
- Up to 500,000 characters per file
- PDF, PowerPoint (PPT/PPTX), and image files are limited to 250,000 characters per file
- Up to 50 files per project
The character limit is separate from file size. A file may be smaller than 32 MB but still contain too much text for Blue J to process.
If a file contains too much text, try using a shorter version or splitting it into smaller files.
If a project reaches the 50-file limit, remove an existing file before adding another.
How long are Project Files stored?
Project Files are designed to persist across research sessions.
Unlike files uploaded directly to a thread, they are not automatically deleted after 24 hours.
You can remove individual files from a project. Deleting a project also deletes the files attached to it.
Who can access my project files?
Projects and their files are currently scoped to the user who created them. They are not shared with other users in your organization.
Blue J may introduce project sharing capabilities in the future.
How secure are Project Files?
Project Files are handled using Blue J's enterprise security controls:
- Files are encrypted in transit and at rest
- Access to stored files is controlled and audited
- Project Files are isolated to customers
- Customer files are not used to train or fine-tune models without explicit prior permission
- Blue J undergoes regular SOC 2 Type II audits
Why your project file upload might not work
Upload didn't go through
The file couldn't be uploaded. Check your connection and try again.
File uploaded but couldn't be processed
The file was uploaded, but Blue J couldn't process it. Remove the file and try uploading it again.
File can't be read
Blue J may not be able to process a file if it is unsupported, empty, password-protected, or invalid.
Upload was interrupted
Leaving the page, refreshing, or closing the tab while a file is uploading will cancel the upload. Blue J will warn you before this happens.
Project Files are turned off for your organization
Your organization's admin controls whether persistent project file storage is enabled. If it is turned off, you won't be able to upload files to projects and the Files tab will not appear.
Tips for better results
- Mention the client, transaction, entity, or other names that appear in your project files
- Tell Blue J what the documents are about when that context may not be obvious
- Ask clear, specific questions about the issue you are researching
- Keep unrelated client or engagement materials in separate projects
You do not need to tell Blue J which file to search. Blue J automatically identifies relevant information from the files in the project when answering your question.
Still having trouble?
If a project file isn't uploading, processing, or being used as expected, contact support and include:
- The file type and size
- What you were trying to do
- The error message you received, if any
- A screenshot, if possible
