Upload files directly to a Blue J thread to ask questions about your own documents alongside Blue J’s sources. Thread-uploaded files are temporary and are automatically deleted after 24 hours.
Which upload method should I use?
- Use a thread upload for a specific question or a short-lived research task.
- Use Project Files when you want documents to remain available across research sessions. Project Files persist and have different formats and limits.
For ongoing research: Add and use Project Files in Blue J
What do you need help with?
How do I upload a file to a thread?
- Start a new question in Blue J.
- Select the paperclip icon in the prompt box.
- Choose the file or files you want to upload.
- Enter a specific question about the document and submit it.
How do I analyze a document and refine the answer?
For example, use an agreement to identify issues, narrow the research, and prepare a draft output. The prompts below illustrate the workflow.
- Upload the agreement and ask: “Identify the tax issues raised by this agreement. Separate the relevant facts from the questions that need further research.”
- Review Blue J’s response, the cited authorities, and relevant document excerpts.
- Ask a targeted follow-up: “Focus on the issue identified in the second section. What additional facts would help narrow the analysis?”
- Request an output: “Turn the research into a short memo with facts, issues, supporting sources, and open questions.”
You can also extract facts from a notice or correspondence, summarize issues in a tax return or information slip, or explore questions raised by partnership, operating, or trust agreements. Review the supporting sources and document excerpts before using a draft output.
Can I watch a walkthrough?
Watch the file-upload demonstration, then use the written steps and example prompts above for your own documents.
Which file types can I upload to a thread?
- Word (.docx)
- Excel (.xlsx) and CSV (.csv)
- PowerPoint (.pptx)
- Images (.jpeg and .png)
- Email (.msg)
- HTML
- Markdown (.md)
What are the thread-upload limits?
- Most file types: up to 50 MB per file.
- All files combined: up to 100 MB per question.
- Excel and HTML: up to 7 MB per file.
- PDFs: up to 1,000 pages.
These limits apply to thread uploads. Do not apply them to Project Files.
How long are thread uploads kept, and how are they protected?
Thread-uploaded documents are encrypted in transit and at rest and are isolated to your session. Thread-uploaded files are automatically deleted after 24 hours; you can also delete files manually.
Why won’t my file upload?
Check that the file type is supported and that each file and the combined upload are within the limits above. If the type is unsupported, convert the document to a supported format, such as PDF or Word, and try again.
Why isn’t the answer addressing my document or question?
A successful upload and a useful answer are separate issues. State what you want Blue J to do with the document. Replace a broad request such as “Analyze this document” with a focused request such as “Summarize the key tax issues in this agreement.”
- Upload only the relevant documents.
- Break a large task into smaller questions.
- Identify the document, issue, and output you want.
- Use a follow-up question to refine the analysis.
How can I get more help?
If the upload still fails after troubleshooting, contact Blue J Support with the file type, size, what you were trying to do, and a screenshot if possible.
