Dictation lets you speak your questions instead of typing them. As you speak, Blue J transcribes your words directly into the prompt box, allowing you to review and edit your question before submitting it.
Dictation is available on both desktop and mobile web.
How to use Dictation
- Click the microphone icon in the prompt box.
- If prompted, allow your browser to access your microphone.
- Speak your question naturally.
- Click Stop when you're finished speaking.
- Review and edit the transcribed text if needed.
- Submit your question as you normally would.
Supported languages
Dictation supports:
- English
- French
Blue J automatically detects which of these languages you're speaking.
Before you submit
After you stop dictation, you'll have an opportunity to review and edit the transcribed text before sending your question.
This is helpful if you want to:
- Correct names, numbers, or technical terms
- Add additional context
- Refine your prompt before submitting
Microphone permissions
The first time you use Dictation, your web browser will ask for permission to access your microphone.
You must allow microphone access before Blue J can transcribe your speech.
If permission is granted, you only need to do this once for that browser.
I don't see the microphone permission prompt
If you don't see a permission prompt when you click the microphone, your browser may already have permission saved.
Try speaking after clicking the microphone icon.
If Dictation still doesn't start, check your browser's microphone permissions.
I accidentally clicked "Don't Allow"
If you denied microphone access, Blue J cannot use Dictation until microphone permissions are enabled again.
To re-enable microphone access:
- Click the lock or settings icon next to the website address in your browser's address bar.
- Locate the Microphone permission.
- Change the permission to Allow.
- Refresh the page.
- Click the microphone icon again.
The exact steps may vary slightly depending on your browser.
My browser says the microphone is blocked
If your browser indicates that microphone access is blocked:
- Confirm your browser has permission to use your microphone.
- Check your computer's operating system settings to make sure your browser is allowed to access the microphone.
- Refresh the page after updating permissions.
The microphone button doesn't respond
If clicking the microphone doesn't start Dictation:
- Make sure you've allowed microphone access.
- Refresh the page and try again.
- Try closing other applications that may be using your microphone.
- Try another supported browser.
I'm using the wrong microphone
If your computer has multiple microphones connected (for example, a headset and a built-in microphone), your browser may be using a different device than you expect.
Check your browser or operating system settings to confirm the correct microphone is selected.
