Blue J Workflows guide you through defined tax tasks and help turn client documents and facts into a draft deliverable for professional review.
Each workflow combines practitioner-designed steps, Blue J’s tax content, and the information you provide. Depending on the task, your deliverable may be a memo, analysis, checklist, response letter, work paper, or client communication.
How are Workflows different from the regular Blue J chat?
Blue J chat is open-ended: you ask questions and direct the conversation. A workflow follows a structured process for a specific task, guides you through the required inputs, and produces a deliverable tailored to the client’s facts.
Who can access Workflows?
During Limited Availability, Workflows are available to eligible customers using Blue J’s US database with the file upload feature enabled.
If you see Workflows in the sidebar, you can use the designated free Workflows. If your firm has a paid package or an approved trial, you’ll also have access to paid Workflows.
For questions about your firm’s access, contact your Customer Success Manager or Blue J Support.
How do I start a workflow?
- Select Workflows in the left navigation.
- Browse the library and choose the workflow you want to run.
- Select Start.
- Follow the prompts to provide the required facts and documents.
- Answer any additional questions as the workflow progresses.
- Review the completed deliverable and its supporting sources.
You can also open the shortcut menu by typing + or / in the prompt box and selecting an available workflow.
If a workflow appears locked, contact Support or your Blue J representative about access.
What information should I provide?
The required information depends on the workflow. Blue J will guide you through the documents, facts, and questions needed for the task.
Provide complete, legible documents and accurate facts. You can include additional relevant context, such as prior-year returns, when appropriate.
Workflows use the information you type or upload when starting the workflow or while it is running. They do not automatically use earlier conversation history, Project files, or firm data. Add any information you want the workflow to consider directly to the workflow.
Can I run more than one workflow at a time?
Yes. You can run workflows in parallel and step away from Blue J while they run. Completion time varies by workflow and the information supplied.
Can I change an earlier answer or skip a required step?
You cannot edit an answer you already submitted or skip a required step. Check your inputs carefully before submitting them.
If an earlier answer needs correction, start a new workflow with the correct information. A workflow you intentionally stop is canceled and cannot be resumed.
How do free and paid Workflows work?
Eligible accounts can use designated free Workflows without a run allowance, subject to rate limits. These runs do not reduce your firm’s paid Workflow allowance.
Paid packages provide an allowance shared across your firm. Contact your Customer Success Manager or Account Executive to discuss packages or whether a trial is available.
Usage beyond a paid allowance depends on your firm’s agreement and may result in additional charges. Contact your Customer Success Manager to confirm your terms or discuss additional capacity.
How do I review, refine, and download a deliverable?
You can review the deliverable in Blue J before downloading or copying it. You can also download or copy intermediate steps.
To request a revised version, continue in the same thread. For example:
- “Make this shorter.”
- “Explain the conclusion in more detail.”
- “Turn this into a client email.”
Direct editing in the document pane and Excel file generation are not supported at this time.
Do deliverables include citations?
Blue J includes sources when relevant to the workflow or step. Review the citations and confirm that they support the analysis and conclusions before relying on the output.
Does the 1040 Client Results Email review a return for errors?
No. It explains the return as filed in a client-ready email, including relevant year-over-year changes when prior-year returns are supplied. It doesn’t currently check for errors, perform a technical review, or suggest planning opportunities.
However, we’ve received feedback that a 1040 technical review would be helpful, and it’s on our roadmap.
Can I create or share my own workflow?
Customer-created or custom Workflows and sharing Workflows with colleagues are not supported at this time. You can suggest additional workflows to your Customer Success Manager.
What should I do if something looks incorrect?
Every workflow deliverable requires professional review. Before using an output with a client, a tax authority, or another recipient, verify the facts, analysis, citations, and conclusions and make any necessary changes. If something appears incorrect, please send us feedback so our team can look into it.
